Tundu Lissu  acquitted of a charge of sedition against him:

Tundu Antiphas Mughwai Lissu, is a Tanzanian lawyer, CHADEMA politician and Member of Parliament for Singida East constituency since 2010.


A case of incitement against prominent Tanzanian opposition politician Tundu Lissu and senior journalist Jabir Idrisa and two colleagues has been dropped by a resident magistrate's court in Dar es Salaam after the government side declined to pursue the case.

Other defendants in the case are Mawio newspaper Editor Simon Mkina, Jabir Idrisa and Jaman company publisher Ismail Mehboob.

Lissu and his associates were charged with five counts of felony criminal mischief for writing and publishing propaganda material with the headline '' Chaos is coming to Zanzibar '' in the Mawio newspaper in violation of the 2002 Newspapers Act.

Between January 12 and 14, 2016 in Dar es Salaam, defendants Jabir Mkina and Lissu wrote the provocative statement.

In the second indictment they were accused on January 14, 2016 of publishing such hate speech in Zanziabar.

In another indictment, defendant Mehboob allegedly published the newspaper on January 13, 2016 at the Jamana building in Dar es Salaam without submitting the affidavit to the registrar of newspapers.

The case, which has been going on for more than five years, has been dropped by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Sylvester Mwakitalu under section 91 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

All defendants are free.
